Going to Beantown will allow me to come home and see Lloyd at least once or twice a month.

In CA you’ll sleep with him every night since you’ll be bringing him with you, duh.  Advantage CA.

11.  Roadtrip
To get to CA you and Lloyd will buy a nice new Toyota Prius on terms and drive across the US taking pictures and eating pie and cheeseburgers on your way to moving to your new home/school.  Advantage CA.

12.  Scriners
Jo, Pam, Kimberly, Keith, ‘mouse, et al.  (closer to Boot, Grud, Skif and ???) Advantage Left Coast.

“Does not allow 1st Year Students to work”?  News to me.  I ran my own business during my first year and managed 20-30 hours of work on top of a full time schedule.  I’m a fast reader, but there was roughly 12 (8-15) hours of reading & homework (on average per week) which I generally did Saturday and Sunday, leaving all my non-class-time free during the week.  Unlike many students, by working hard, I actually read every page assigned.  [something about giving the busy person the assignment] Given your connections in the Bay Area (ahem) I imagine you could probably pull down on the order of $1K/month without killing yourself.

Oh, dear, oh, dear…

I should have specified.  Lloyd will not be coming with me to CA.  I mean, we’ve talked about taking the cross-country trip if I move out there for school, but he is not quitting his job, at least not yet.  If he stays at his job through the middle of 2009, he will be eligible for the company pension.  Anything could happen after that, of course, but for 1L, we’ve been working under the assumption that we’ll be apart for that year.  So geography-wise, it’s still a draw.

The Scriner proximity is a big plus for CA, of course.  :) Then again, on the Right Coast, there’s Lloyd, both sets of parents, Bunni, some pals in Canada, my pal in Pittsburgh (which, again, is not close, but is still only an hour’s flight away), goli, e, Molly...So that’s a draw, too, and a damn tough one.

Regarding working:  I’ll check the FAQ again, but I’m pretty sure that they spelled out explicitly that 1L’s weren’t allowed to work.  Maybe it’s just that they’re not eligible for work study—in which case, well, that’s encouraging news. :)

I’d say that in Boston there’s me, but it’s looking like I won’t be here much longer. But, if you move here, maybe you can have my Scrine-famous house. And it’s Scrine-famous problems.

“Lloyd will not be coming with me to CA.”

Given that specification, it’s a clear win for Beantown.  Once (or twice) a month is still an achingly long time apart. Longer?  No, thanks.

I finally got around to reading this, some two or three weeks behind schedule.  So much for timely input, which of course, I didn’t have anyway.

As far as Steve’s Scrine-famous house is concerned, I do believe he should donate it to Scrine when he moves on.  Scriners could then use it as an East Coast retreat center, where they can go to work on furnaces and squeaky doors and wiring problems while they sit around the house, staring at birds out the window, getting up occasionally to bump their heads and shins, tangling themselves up in office chairs and whatnot.

I like the sound of that! Of course, the way my (unexpected) job search is going, I may be living in the attic and renting the rest of the house to traveling Scriners…

But hey, I don’t think I’ve written about the attic yet.
