In a small but intimate ceremony early this morning, Scrine founding member Keith flew to Florida to personally welcome e into The 300 Club, presenting her with a framed certificate commemorating her achievement and a gold watch fob he’d found in the diner car of a train back in 1912. “The watch itself is long gone,” Keith said, addressing those in attendance, “but like e’s constant presence and dedication to Scrine, the fob lives on.” The guest of honor wore a beautiful handmade hat brimming with feathers and bobbles and a pair of stunning, purple cowboy boots. Keith, since he was traveling, was dressed in formal attire, capped off with a simple but elegant bowler.
I sometimes forget about the lonely Scrineblog, sitting over here like a browbeaten stepchild, getting no attention whatsoever while Scrine grows bigger and better under the loving and watchful eye of all Scriners. But every once in awhile I remember, look over and see it pouting, and that’s when I remind it that it is as vital a part of the site as Scrine itself. Scrine is the monkey dancing around for our pleasure, I remind it, and you, my lonely Scrineblog, are the organ, and what good, my friend, is a dancing monkey without music?
We, of course, are the organ grinders, packing it all around on our backs. But enough about me and monkeys, I want to talk about tags.
I have to admit never really understanding the necessity of tags. I’ve seen them in use on other sites and thought that they weren’t all that different from categories, which I’ve used on my other sites but never on Scrine. And until just recently, the ExpressionEngine software never had a tagging module, so it wasn’t something I bothered giving much thought. But after putzing around with Scrine now for nearly three years, I was beginning to see how tags might work for us, and so when it became available as a software add-on, I bought it. And boy am I glad.
After only a couple of days, we’ve added tags to roughly 7% of the Scrine sentences, and what I’m already seeing is the ability for us to quickly and easily draw together all of those quirky and odd ideas that have been making their way onto the site since March of 2005. I’ve always wanted an easy way for all of us to point the direction to our favorite Scrine sentences, and tags, it turns out, is the easy answer. With a few quick words, I’m now able to easily gather together some of the sentences that brought extra happiness to my days. Not only did I create a “favorites-keith” tag, but a “favorite titles - keith” tag. How easy and fun is that?
The thing that is surprising me the most, though, is the unexpected pleasure I’m getting over looking at that tagcloud and seeing ideas form in my own head for sentences that I could write. Characters and ideas that I’d forgotten about, or worse yet, maybe missed or only glanced at the first time around, are popping out at me in ways they weren’t before. Thanks to tags.
So yes, the unexpected pleasure of tagging is taking me by surprise, and at the moment, I couldn’t be any happier.
Br. Ezra was honored today as the newest member of The 300 Club, receiving both the secret handshake and a coupon good for 20% off any word cloud tattoo at the parlor of his choice.
Punch was served and a representative from Chrysler Motors gave a brief talk on the history of floor mats.
Only one week to go until my house is sold and I’m finished moving home and business and clearing out the accumulation of several families over the course of roughly 25 years. The family farm is not an easy thing to walk away from, mentally and physically, and the last month has been tiring work.
But come next week, the deal should be done and I should be sitting snuggly in the stress-free comfort of my new home. A rental. No yard to tend to. No piles of history to worry about. Just wheel out the trash once a week and call it good.
I’m looking forward to getting back to writing. I’m looking forward to getting back to Scrine. I’ve been busy, but not so busy that I haven’t thought of a couple of format changes I might give a try. Activity around Scrinetunes is sure to increase as I get back some of that precious time I’ve been missing, and I’m looking forward to that. I’ve gathered a ton of music together the last couple of months, and look forward to sitting down for a listen.
Yes, more time will be a good thing. More Scrine, more music, and yes, even the return of regular Scrine Comics. I’m looking forward to using up every minute of that free time.
While mostly complete, the redesign of Scrine still drags on, due mostly to time constraints on my end. The days are busy and hectic and the fact that things like link colors don’t sometimes match must, I’m afraid, take a back seat.
Some things that need attention, at least that I’m aware of, are:
1. The Scrine Store ad isn’t the right size.
2. The yellow scrine skin has some link color issues.
3. Paragraph spacing in the comments needs correcting.
Do you know of anything else that could use some attention or a bit of tweaking? If you do, please speak up, because I can always use your help.
For a long time Scrine was listed with a site called ORblogs, which basically tracks any Oregon blog that registers with it. Fun at a regional level, so to speak. The site is even broken down into separate cities, so that if you like, you can follow along with the antics of those right there in your home town.
As I passed through ORblogs the other day, preparing to add Brand New Monster to their list (because after all, everyone in Oregon should be aware that I’m about to become a cartoonist), I suddenly realized that Scrine was no longer on their lists. So I jumped through a few more hoops and re-submitted, thinking that we’d been bumped due to a glitch of some sort. And I was right, only it turns out, as so many things turn out these days, that Scrine was the glitch. It appears, after some review on their part, that they felt Scrine wasn’t quite “Oregon enough”, since many of our members weren’t actually Oregonians. True indeed, so who am I to argue with facts. ORblogs liked Scrine, they just didn’t want us.
Actually, I think the email I received just now explaining their position is very positive.
Thanks for submitting your blog. It was in the directory for quite a while, but I removed it because it was a bit overwhelming to the site. You have over 40 contributors, and I’m guessing that most aren’t based in Oregon. The posts are very unconventional, and while I think you have a great project going, I don’t think it’s quite right for the ORblogs directory. I feel like scrine is more of a group art project/discussion forum than a blog--even though it’s in a reverse chronological format.
I liked the part where he said our ”posts are very unconventional.” I think I lay the blame for our ORblog woes entirely on Steve’s shoulders. Ever since he wrote about that miniature condor’s nest in Harold’s hair, I’ve had nothing but trouble earning the respect of the Internet.
Just a heads-up about a small formatting change I’ve made here on Scrineblog. If you post to Scrineblog, you may or may not have noticed the addition of a new entry field - Private Music. This is the field where I will be placing links to music that I’d like to share with everyone.
What this means to you is that if you are logged in, you will see the music. If you are not, the music will be gone. It’s my attempt to keep those pesky Internet robots at bay, and will allow me to keep the music up and posted longer than I have in the past.
Thank you. We now return you to your regular broadcast, still in progress.
While I still haven’t done anything with it other than quickly throw up a couple of small definitions as a test, I’m finding myself becoming more and more excited about Scrine’s newest feature, the wiki. I can already imagine myself sitting back to spend hour upon wonderful hour writing nothing but more lies as I attempt to explain and define what is happening in the world of Scrine.
Think of it. Let’s define Henry and Bob. We’ll talk about ducks and attempt to rationalize the fear some have of these creatures. Think of a wiki page devoted to the attempt to explain Minimalist Jones. Where did he come from? What happened to him during his life that could possibly explain his becoming such a radical minimalist in these times of great abundance? Why did he name his daughter Abraham Jones and who is the woman who would allow such a thing to happen?
Imagine the senseless possibilites, if you will. Pages devoted to the defining of God as presented through Scrine’s eyes, an explanation of how the girl named Becky came to realize her magical powers, discussions on mangos, romance novels, alligators, and ethics. Where is Bronwyn going? The wiki will know. And what about hoboes, you wonder? Yes, I imagine there will be much talk of hoboes and the great hobo parade so few have the good fortune to witness.
So, you can see why I’m excited, can’t you? I haven’t had the potential for this much distraction since I don’t know when. If I had to guess, I’d say since the Pot Roast with Steve tour began, which was… oh yeah, yesterday.
Such a busy life I lead. I can hardly keep up.
Can you feel the excitement building? Tomorrow is final judging day for the big ExpressionEngine Shootout contest. Will Scrine bring home the bacon? I can’t wait to see.
Scrineblog will soon be implementing Categories to help a bit with the organization.
The default category is None. You don’t need to enter a category. I’ve currently set up only Story and Scrine News. If you’d like to add a category that fits your particular need, email me with the name and I’ll add it.
