Sneaking up on an egret is always tough work, and it will take a diligent nature enthusiast many attempts before he has plucked enough feathers for a decent hat.

i have two, as a pair nests along the shore of my lake and drop them carelessly every so often; i think they would be more than enough for a fine ten gallon hat.

I saw somewhere that egrets almost became extinct because of the popularity of their feathers for hats around the end of the 19th century.  That’s where this sentence came from.
