Why does ‘the obligatory cake’ sound better than ‘the required cake’?

I think because ‘ogligatory’ sounds like ‘oblong,’ which makes the cake sound like it might be bigger.

That makes perfect sense.
Of course, it wouldn’t actually matter to me if the cake were obligatory or required; I’d be happy to eat both.
