People who share their tomatoes with their friends/neighbors, particularly with those friends/neighbors who are still finding their feet in strange surroundings, should receive medals of honor, large cash stipends, and lifetime supplies of free lemon cake.

It’s got my vote.

Which brings up a point.  I thought it was the existing neighbors’ job to drop by with small gifts of welcome to people who move into their neighborhood.

When I moved into my current neighborhood about a year ago a week passed with nothing but waves when neighbors were forced to make eye contact.  So I baked cookies and went and introduced my family around.  I wonder if any of them even reailzed this was backward.

Lately two new neighbors have moved to the area and we showed up at their doors after giving them a couple days to settle, bearing fresh tomatos and smiles.  I have no idea what happened to civility, but I refuse to accept that it’s dead.

Somehow I think the rule is different for renters, though I baked cookies and went across the street for some new neighbors when I lived in our old house. I immediately had a difference of opinion with the woman about what kind of preschool was best for kids, and we never spoke again (!)

Oh, my.  Maybe if *I* bring some cookies over to you, we can undo the accrual of Weird Neighbor Karma. ;)
