That’s the thing about Cake—the name itself would be sufficient for big lurve, but then you put the record on and discover that they are an absolutely crackin’ tight band.  I still remember the first time I heard their cover of “I Will Survive,” and how it blew my little mind away.  I just love them to distraction.

Oh, viki, they are really, really good.  If you’ve ever watched the show Chuck on NBC (which I also love to distraction, and is the reason I dream of a speedy resolution to the Writers’ Guild strike), the theme song is a snippet from Cake’s “Short Skirt, Long Jacket,” probably the closest thing they’ve had to a chart hit.

You cannot go wrong with any Cake album, but if you have to pick one, I’d go with Comfort Eagle.  It has “Short Skirt” on it, as well as my other two favorite Cake songs, “Meanwhile Rick James” and “Symphony in C.”
