I am a politician. My platform is 'mainstream values'. Would you vote for me?
I can’t answer that until I know what you mean by ’mainstream values’? 3
Of course. I’m mainsteam, I have values - why wouldn’t I vote for you? 0
Not sure... My friends refer to me as a freak/eccentric/quirky/left of centre - is that mainstream? 0
Nope. Definitely Not. No way. You sound like a kook. 4
Hell YES! 0

So, I can’t help it… something gets in my brain I have to turn it over and consider it and give my friends, family and colleages pop quizes until the thoughts stop buzzing and my mind is still… well, more so than it was when I was crazily considering a new thought, or revisiting an old one.

So, Scriners, if you are feeling generous - or frivilous, please participate in my pop quiz - which is really only half of the pop-quiz I’d give you verbally.

My full pop quiz is has a few more questions:

“I’m a politician.  My platform is ‘mainstream values’.  Would you vote for me? Why/Why Not?  What do you think I mean by the term mainstream values?”

Oh… not trying to bring politics to scrine either… my state has elections coming up so we’re kinda being flooded with election related stuff at the moment so it’s hard not to think about the upcoming election and the various participants in that particular drama.  I’ve tried.  Not working.

In retrospect, I decided I wanted to delete this post (and poll), but after fiddling and testing (which included voting in my own poll) it seems I can’t.  sigh.

You should be able to delete your own post.  I was under the impression that it was one of Scrine’s mainstream values.  I’ll look into it.

nah, don’t delete it, why?

since “mainstream values” has been coopted into a proper name for a particular agenda rather than an indication of those values that may be mainstream, the choice is a no-brainer for me.

I am apparently not up to speed quite yet this morning, so my previous “mainstream values” response was not exactly accurate.  Actually, it wasn’t accurate at all.

The forum works completely different than Scrine when it comes to editing.  Here, individuals are never granted edited privileges, but rather, certain members are set up as moderators, to watch over certain areas of the forum.  The moderator is given the power of editing.  My thought was to ask people if they would like to help moderate, but only after some time has passed, and I have a chance to see who is willing to participate in the forum on a semi-regular basis.

I really think I can only participate in these polls if people stop putting “beer and pizza” as an option.

I feel very strongly about the “No way. You sound like a kook” thing, but I also feel very strongly about beer and pizza.

It’s just not playing fair.

I think “Beer and Pizza!” definitley beats, “none of the above” or “other” - yet, strangely indicates the same thing.

BTW… when do we move from ‘new member’ to ‘old hand’?

It beats “none of the above”, but it ain’t the same.  I wouldn’t vote for “none of the above” just because it’s so appealing.  I would for beer and pizza (oh, yes, golden amber, my wordy indeedy).

Golden Amber? What about a thick dark brew that is oddly reminicient to some of vegemite but that in reality has been sent from the gods to tempt those with ‘Taste Buds That Know’.

BEER!  Alright.  Cheese thingos? (chunk of haloumi, topped with a fresh mint leaf and a wee piece of cherry tomato wrapped in filo or puff pastry… ahhhhh my mouth waters at the thought).  Or not.  Beer is a fine option on its own.

I believe New Member turns into simply Member when your total posts is 15.

I haven’t come up with witty titles for the member categories yet.  At first I’d come up with some phonetic spellings, like n(y)o? for new, etc., but then I hadn’t visited the forum for a month or so, and when I came back, I’d forgotten I’d named the new category that, and without actually doing any thinking, thought the site had been hacked by some renegade Chinese youth named n(y)oo.

I, of course, turned out to be my own hacker.  In my case, however, renegade=slow thinking, and youth doesn’t even enter into the equation.

So I’ve decided that if I come up with new titles, they can’t be so clever that they embarrass me a month later.

I think they should be scrine specific.  For example, when you’ve posted enough (however that may be) entries, it should somehow indicate you’ve joined the crazy people ... or something.  It’s hot.  My brain is all mushy.  It could have melted.

My original idea that tricked me was all phonetic, and all bird based.

Talk about crazy people…

I’d never vote for anyone who professed to have “mainstream values”. In this day and age where Neocons and Moral Majorites claim they speak for the mainstream, I’d never trust you had anywhere near same mainstream values as me. I’d be more likely to listen to you if you promised you had Off The Beaten Track values.

more and more i know less and less about ‘mainstream values’ and what they consist of.  i would need a better definition of both words in order to vote informedly for.  otherwise, i will vote against.  as a rule.
